Call Summary: We are seeking proposals from artists to provide a granite sculpture in the style of a traditional Celtic high cross, to be placed in the center of a memorial rose garden. The cross should include traditional Celtic design, and may include biblical scenes. The base on which the cross is mounted will include inscriptions honoring John Hamilton Gillespie and early Scots who settled in Sarasota (names to be provided by Church of the Redeemer.) Applications are due by 30 June 2019. The budget may not exceed $26,296 including: fabrication, lighting, installation, transportation, site preparation, and any other expenses associated with the design, fabrication and installation of this art.
Project Description : 6 ft Tall, 3 ft wide at the horizontal cross, mounted on a base approximately 3 ft in height. Material to be used shall be granite.
Art Goals or criteria:
To create a focal piece for the memorial rose garden reflective of the celtic heritage of the founders of Sarasota, and one of the founders of Church of the Redeemer.
Art Location Description
The cross will be in the center of the memorial rose garden, a square approximately 30 ft x 40 ft. divided into four quadrants by pathways. The cross, on it’s platform, will be at the center. Sufficient space needs to be provided for individuals to walk around the cross and remain on the pathway.
The rose garden is on the west side of the city block occupied by Church of the Redeemer, and just south of the new addition.

Budget
$26,296 to include all expenses of the artist, fabricator, subcontractors for electrical or other infrastructure required to place and illuminate the art, transportation, installation, and any other related expenses.
Artist Eligibility
Experience with sculpture is preferred, however qualified fabricators are available who can work with the artist to produce the cross from an artist’s rendering. We typically have worked with artists resident in the Tampa Bay Area, and specifically in the Sarasota/Bradenton community.
Entry Requirements: Diagrams of the sculpture, written description of materials proposed, fabricator, lighting requirements. Samples of previous work with photos of installations, Artist resume including biography, educational background and previous commissions.
Timeline:

Selection process: A committee comprised of clergy, staff and parishioners from Church of the Redeemer will evaluate entries and present recommendations to the Rector and Vestry.
Notification to Artist: Artists will be notified regarding selection by 8 July 2019.
Delivery and Installation: Artwork must be completed and installed and accepted by Church of the Redeemer and the City of Sarasota Art Commission by 16 December 2019.
Payment: Fees proposed for this installation must include fabrication, transportation, lighting, and installation of the art on-site. Payment will follow the guidelines of the City of Sarasota for Public Art, 50% upon selection, 25% upon completion, and 25% upon acceptance by the Public Art Commission.
